Apple Unveils New Studio Display and Studio Display XDR with 5K Retina XDR Technology
Apple has introduced a new generation of professional displays designed to work seamlessly with the Mac lineup. The company revealed the updated Apple Studio Display along with the all-new Apple Studio Display XDR, delivering major improvements in brightness, color accuracy, connectivity, and professional workflows.
The new display lineup targets everyone from everyday Mac users to creative professionals who require high-precision screens for video editing, photography, design, and 3D production.
A Powerful Companion for Mac
The updated Studio Display features a 27-inch 5K Retina display with over 14 million pixels and 600 nits of brightness. The screen supports the P3 wide color gamut, producing accurate and vibrant visuals for tasks like photo editing, coding, and content creation.
Apple also improved the integrated camera and audio system. The display includes a 12-megapixel Center Stage camera that keeps users centered during video calls, along with support for Desk View, which can simultaneously show the user and their desk during presentations or demonstrations.
The display features a studio-quality three-microphone array and a six-speaker sound system with Spatial Audio. Apple says the system includes four force-cancelling woofers that deliver deeper bass and two high-performance tweeters for immersive sound.
Connectivity has also been upgraded with Thunderbolt 5 support. The display includes two Thunderbolt ports and additional USB-C connections for accessories, while allowing users to daisy-chain multiple displays or connect high-speed peripherals.
Using the included Thunderbolt cable, the display can also deliver up to 96W of power, enough to fast-charge laptops such as the Apple MacBook Pro.
Studio Display XDR Targets Professional Workflows
For professionals who require even higher performance, Apple introduced the new Studio Display XDR. The monitor features a 27-inch 5K Retina XDR display with a mini-LED backlight system that includes more than 2,000 local dimming zones.
This advanced backlight technology allows the display to reach up to 1000 nits of sustained brightness and an impressive 2000 nits of peak HDR brightness. The result is significantly improved contrast and more detailed highlights and shadows when working with HDR content.
The display also offers a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio and supports both P3 and Adobe RGB color gamuts. These capabilities make it ideal for professional workflows such as HDR video editing, film production, graphic design, and color grading.
Smooth Motion with 120Hz Refresh Rate
Studio Display XDR includes a 120Hz refresh rate for smoother visuals when scrolling, editing video, or playing games. The monitor also supports Adaptive Sync, which dynamically adjusts the refresh rate between 47Hz and 120Hz depending on the content.
This technology helps deliver smoother playback in video editing software and reduces latency in graphics-intensive tasks.
Advanced Camera, Audio, and Connectivity
Like the standard Studio Display, the XDR model also includes the 12MP Center Stage camera, studio-quality microphones, and a six-speaker audio system with Spatial Audio support.
Connectivity is built around Thunderbolt 5, with two Thunderbolt ports and additional USB-C ports. The display can also function as a Thunderbolt hub, providing up to 140W of charging power — enough to fast-charge larger laptops such as the 16-inch MacBook Pro.
New Features for Medical Imaging
Apple is also expanding the capabilities of the display for healthcare professionals. Studio Display XDR introduces DICOM medical imaging presets, designed for diagnostic radiology workflows.
A new Medical Imaging Calibrator in macOS will allow radiologists to view diagnostic images directly on the display using compatible applications. The feature is currently pending regulatory approval in the United States.
Design and Configuration Options
Both displays are available with either standard glass or an optional nano-texture glass finish designed to reduce reflections in bright environments.
The Studio Display comes with a tilt-adjustable stand, while optional configurations include a tilt-and-height adjustable stand or a VESA mount adapter for custom desk setups.
The Studio Display XDR includes a tilt- and height-adjustable stand with a counterbalanced arm that allows smooth adjustments while keeping the display stable.
Pricing and Availability
The new Studio Display starts at $1,599, while the Studio Display XDR starts at $3,299.
Customers can pre-order both displays starting March 4, with availability beginning March 11 through Apple’s online store and authorized resellers.
Apple says the new displays are also designed with sustainability in mind. Both models use recycled materials, including 100 percent recycled aluminum in the stand and high levels of recycled glass, as part of the company’s broader goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2030.
