Wielding Dual Screens: How to Use an iPad as a Second Monitor
What if you magically found a new monitor sitting in your lap?
If you already have an iPad in your home, it's possible to use iPad as a second monitor. This lets you enjoy all the benefits of a "two-screen experience" without having to shell out for an expensive new monitor.
Curious about how you can get some dual-screen magic happening today? Keep reading to learn the answer!
App-Based Solutions
We'll go ahead and give you the bad news first: for the most part, your iPad was not designed to natively hook up with your computer. That's why almost all of our solutions to this problem are app-based.
There are multiple apps to choose from (more on this later), which is something of a double-edged sword for you as a user. On one hand, it can be annoying and confusing to learn all about the different apps that can pull this off. On the other hand, having this much selection means that you can choose something that is both in your price range and easy to use.
Different Ways to Connect
A traditional monitor hooks to your computer via connections such as VGA or even HDMI. How, then, will you be able to connect your iPad to your computer and use it as a monitor?
This depends on which method you end up using. In short, different apps require different ways to connect.
Some of them connect via wi-fi. However, most solutions use the existing iPad connection wire (either the lightning wire or, for older models, the 30-pin wire).
One bit of good news is that each method involves using a resource you already have. This helps to keep costs down, though there are a few costs associated with the different solutions.

Are There Any Hidden Costs?
Chances are that your main goal is to avoid spending nearly two hundred dollars on a new monitor and a two-screen setup. While these solutions will still save you a ton of money, many of them have a small cost associated with them.
As we noted before, there are multiple apps you can use to connect the computer and iPad. Most of these apps run between $7 and $20, with higher prices being reserved for newer apps.
This doesn't exactly break the bank, especially versus buying new hardware. But the only people who can truly connect their iPad and their computer are Mac users.
Windows or Apple?
Almost everything in the computer world can be summed up with this question: "Windows or Apple?"When it comes to using an iPad as a second monitor, you can answer with another question: "why not both?"
We have information below about different apps you can use. Some are suitable for Windows users and some for Mac users. Some are even suitable for both.
If you use Mac and have a newer iPad (made within the last few years), you may be able to connect by simply using the existing Mac operating system. With macOS Catalina, you can quickly connect your devices using either wi-fi or wire.
For Mac users, there has never been a better time to learn how to use iPad as second monitor in macOS Catalina!
Who Is This Useful For?
If you don't have a Mac or want to explore other options, you'll need to scope out other apps. Before we get to our recommendations, it's important to review who would benefit the most from using two monitors.
One natural answer is college students. Such students often must cycle between multiple windows and apps as they complete schoolwork. By connecting iPads and laptops, even "on the go" students can efficiently examine twice as many windows at once, doubling their efficiency.
Another answer is "serious multitaskers." If you have a job where you must juggle multiple plates, having access to all of your info at once is a real time-saver.
Basically, anyone who is either very busy or a visual learner will benefit from having access to two screens at once.
What Are the Best Apps to Use?
Like we said, you have plenty of apps to choose from. But what are these apps, and how much will they cost you?
One of the cheapest Windows-friendly options is Splashtop Wired XDisplay. As of this writing, the iPad version of this app is completely free. They also offer an Android version, though it currently costs $7.
While Splashtop is handy, you get what you pay for. To get a smoother "second monitor" experience for Windows or Mac, you should check out Duet Display. The iOS app costs $10, though you can access more bells and whistles with annual subscription options.
If you are a Mac user who wants a seasoned solution, Air Display has been around for a while. It is highly reliable and offers good customer support. And Air Display 3 currently costs only $9.99.
What Are the Benefits of Using Two Screens?
Earlier, we talked about who would benefit from using a second monitor. But what are the benefits, in general, of doing this?
In terms of productivity, using two screens makes it easier to copy and paste information. It also makes it easier to edit videos and write essays and reports because you have access to much more information at once.
Generally speaking, two screens let you get your various tasks done faster, both at work or at home. And it creates a richer experience for gamers...so much so that it can be hard to go back to one screen!
What Are the Drawbacks of Using Two Screens?
Now you know the benefits of two screens. But are there any drawbacks?
The answer is "not really." It's true that some people dislike the cost of the app, and those on the go might not love the time it takes to connect the iPad each time.
But this remains the cheapest and most efficient way to have a second monitor. And we can't even calculate how much time and money you'll save in the long run.
Use iPad As a Second Monitor: What's Next?
Now you know how to use iPad as a second monitor. But do you know how to stay on top of other tech developments?

'Project Qatar Mobility': Self-driving Shuttles Set to Take Doha's Local Public Transport to the Next Level in 2022
Earlier today at the Doha Forum in Qatar, in the presence of His Excellency the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohamed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani, representatives of Volkswagen AG and the Qatar Investment Authority (QIA) signed 'Project Qatar Mobility'. The signing was witnessed by several Qatari ministers, dignitaries and high representatives of Qatar and Germany.
For the first time ever a cutting-edge fleet of self-driving Level 4 electric shuttles will usher in a new era of urban mobility in a capital city in 2022: Earlier today at the Doha Forum in Qatar, in the presence of several Qatari dignitaries, representatives of Volkswagen AG and the Qatar Investment Authority (QIA) signed the 'Project Qatar Mobility'.
The goal is to develop a ground-breaking autonomous transport project and transform the future of urban mobility to a sustainable and commercial deployment of AD shuttles and Bus Services – even beyond 2022. Fostering a cross-brand collaboration as blueprint for future AD solutions, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, Scania, MOIA and AID-Autonomous Intelligent Driving will play an important role in this project. During the largest sporting event in the world, Qatar will thus be the venue for the world's first emission-free, electric and autonomous public transport system.
The agreement was signed by QIA CEO Mr Mansoor Al-Mahmoud and Dr Herbert Diess, Chairman of Volkswagen Group, at a ceremony in Doha today. The initiative, which is known as "Project Qatar Mobility", underlines the mutual commitment to both smart technologies and green transport:
QIA and Volkswagen will work together to develop the required physical and digital infrastructure to seamlessly integrate a fleet of self-driving vehicles into Doha's existing public transport network. Autonomous, electric ID. BUZZ AD from Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles will shuttle up to 4 passengers in Westbay area on semi-fixed routes, while high-tech Scania buses pick up larger groups. Volkswagen Group's units AID and MOIA will provide the SDS knowledge and the app software to run the service. For the first time four Volkswagen Group brands work together on such a project of urban mobility.
The landmark project will create a holistic ecosystem for autonomous driving, including the creation of an appropriate legal framework, smart city infrastructure and transfer of knowledge, which can be used as a blueprint to transform urban mobility, both in Qatar and beyond. Closed testing of the shuttle vehicles and buses is expected to begin in 2020 and trials will start as early as 2021. The project will go live during 2022, providing a technical showcase of future autonomous driving.
Dr Herbert Diess, Chairman of Volkswagen, said: "Project Qatar Mobility will play a very important role in our Strategy Together 2025+. Addressing the economic growth, social development, and environmental management challenges identified as part of our vision, and underlines our commitment to investing in next generation mobility. We will be experiencing real-world learnings and use the project as a stepping stone – for generations to come."
Within the Volkswagen Group, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles (VWCV) is responsible for Autonomous Driving, Mobility as a Service (MaaS) and Transport as a Service (TaaS), due to the fact that first use cases are planned in the commercial sector. In future, VWCV will therefore be developing and producing corresponding Special Purpose Vehicles (SPV), such as robo-taxis and robo-vans. Outlining the aims of the project, Dr Thomas Sedran, Chairman of the Board of VWCV: "Utilising the Bulli of tomorrow with the autonomous driving system currently being developed by AID, adding the intelligent ride pooling from MOIA and enabling it to be booked via an app – thus beginning the future of urban transport: CO2 neutral mobility combined with SDS technology for maximum efficiency and safety. In this way we are transporting an entire society, with all its requirements for clean, intelligent and sustainable mobility. VWCV is becoming an integrated mobility provider. Autonomous Driving is the key issue for the transformation of our core business."
Henrik Henriksson, President and CEO of Scania says: "At Scania, our purpose is to drive the shift to sustainable transport. In the coming years, technological and infrastructural progress in electric and autonomous vehicles will be key enablers in that shift. With regards to people transport, a higher degree of sharing is also important and through advances in autonomous transport it will be simpler to introduce more flexibility in shared people transport. It is exciting to play a role in cutting edge projects like this one in Qatar."
Commenting on the announcement, Mr Mansoor Al Mahmoud, CEO of QIA said: "For our cities to progress we need a new wave of innovation. AI-enabled, emission-free transportation technologies will help advance urban mobility, while diminishing congestion and improving energy efficiency."

FCA Joins 'Responsible Sourcing Blockchain Network' to Help Build a More Ethical Electric Vehicle Supply Chain
FCA today announced that it has joined the Responsible Sourcing Blockchain Network (RSBN), an industry collaboration using blockchain technology to support sustainable, responsible sourcing and production practices from mine to market.
Built on the IBM Blockchain Platform and assured by RCS Global Group, the RSBN is on track to become commercially operational by spring 2020. Simultaneously, FCA will work with RSBN to launch a global audit and trace of cobalt in its supply chain.
Traceability and mapping of raw materials are essential to more efficiently and preemptively mitigate unethical practices that threaten the future for the communities where the raw materials are sourced.
"Our commitment to the responsible procurement of raw materials is vital to the integrity and sustainability of our supply chain, especially as our electrification strategy ramps up," said Carl Smiley, Chief Purchasing and Supply Chain Officer, FCA. "Embarking on this journey together with technology and industry leaders will propel our ability to have visibility into artisanal and small-scale mines, allowing us to better manage the social and environmental impacts of our business."
FCA intends to launch more than 30 electrified nameplates by 2022, and the consortium will help enable a responsible supply chain of cobalt, which is used in lithium-ion batteries that power electric vehicles.
RSBN is building an open, industry-wide blockchain platform to trace responsibly produced minerals from source through to end product, with RCS Global assessing each participating entity against responsible sourcing requirements set by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and industry bodies. RSBN participants include Ford Motor Company, Volkswagen Group, Volvo, LG Chem and Huayou Cobalt.
"We are hugely excited that Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, one of the world's leading auto manufacturers, has joined the RSBN. With this move, FCA signals its intent to robustly address the issue of responsible sourcing in its supply chain and we look forward to working with them to achieve this," said Dr. Nicholas Garrett, CEO, RCS Global Group. "The RSBN is expanding rapidly, connecting actors throughout the battery supply chain and beyond, all of whom have a focus on proving good practice in responsible sourcing and production."
"We are excited to welcome FCA to the Responsible Sourcing Blockchain Network (RSBN) as this will help to expand the benefits of the network to many more participants across their global supply chain," said Dirk Wollschlager, General Manager, IBM Global Automotive, Aerospace and Defense Industries. "RSBN has already made significant progress in improving ethical sourcing of minerals."
Additionally, FCA recently contributed to the Responsible Business Alliance (RBA) Foundation Upstream Due Diligence Smelter Fund to help enable smelters and refiners to partially offset the costs of on-the-ground due diligence activities, in line with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation & Development (OECD) due diligence guidelines. The Foundation supports the charitable, scientific and educational purposes of the Responsible Minerals Initiative (RMI), of which FCA is a member.
FCA corporate citizenship efforts are aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, which aim to address global challenges, including those related to poverty, inequality, climate, environmental degradation, prosperity, and peace and justice.
The Company also uses and teaches suppliers the OECD 5-Step Framework for Upstream and Downstream Supply Chains, which provides a common and foundational tool to help solidify responsible sourcing practices and decisions made throughout our supply chain. FCA requires that suppliers and their sub-suppliers adhere to all applicable global laws and regulations.

Scientists Rank World's Most Important, Most Threatened Mountain Water Towers
Scientists from around the world have assessed the planet's 78 mountain glacier–based water systems and, for the first time, ranked them in order of their importance to adjacent lowland communities, and evaluated their vulnerability to future environmental and socioeconomic changes. These systems, known as mountain water towers, store and transport water via glaciers, snow packs, lakes and streams, thereby supplying invaluable water resources to 1.9 billion people globally—roughly a quarter of the world's population.
Melting ice from the Khumbu glacier runs down the mountain at Everest Base Camp, Nepal in the Ganges-Bramaputra water tower. The region is expected to see a 1.6 degree C temperature rise by 2050. New research supported by National Geographic and Rolex’s Perpetual Planet partnership highlights the importance and vulnerability of the world’s glacier-based water systems. Learn more at natgeo.com/PerpetualPlanet. Photo Credit: Brittany Mumma, National Geographic.
The research, published in the prestigious scientific journal Nature, provides evidence that global water towers are at risk, in many cases critically, due to the threats of climate change, growing populations, mismanagement of water resources, and other geopolitical factors. Further, the authors conclude that it is essential to develop international, mountain-specific conservation and climate change adaptation policies and strategies to safeguard both ecosystems and people downstream.
Globally, the most relied-upon mountain system is the Indus water tower in Asia, according to their research. The Indus water tower—made up of vast areas of the Himalayan mountain range and covering portions of Afghanistan, China, India and Pakistan—is also one of the most vulnerable. High-ranking water tower systems on other continents are the southern Andes, the Rocky Mountains and the European Alps.
To determine the importance of these 78 water towers, researchers analyzed the various factors that determine how reliant downstream communities are upon the supplies of water from these systems. They also assessed the vulnerability of water resources, as well as the people and ecosystems that depend on them, based on predictions of future climate and socioeconomic changes.
Of the 78 global water towers identified, the following are the five most relied-upon systems by continent:
Asia: Indus, Tarim, Amu Darya, Syr Darya, Ganges-Brahmaputra
Europe: Rhône, Po, Rhine, Black Sea North Coast, Caspian Sea Coast
North America: Fraser, Columbia and Northwest United States, Pacific and Arctic Coast, Saskatchewan-Nelson, North America-Colorado
South America: South Chile, South Argentina, Negro, La Puna region, North Chile
The study, which was authored by 32 scientists from around the world, was led by Prof. Walter Immerzeel and Dr. Arthur Lutz of Utrecht University, longtime researchers of water and climate change in high mountain Asia.
"What is unique about our study is that we have assessed the water towers' importance, not only by looking at how much water they store and provide, but also how much mountain water is needed downstream and how vulnerable these systems and communities are to a number of likely changes in the next few decades," said Immerzeel. Lutz added, "By assessing all glacial water towers on Earth, we identified the key basins that should be on top of regional and global political agendas."
This research was supported by National Geographic and Rolex as part of their Perpetual Planet partnership, which aims to shine a light on the challenges facing the Earth's critical life-support systems, support science and exploration of these systems, and empower leaders around the world to develop solutions to protect the planet.
"Mountains are iconic and sacred places around the world, but the critical role they play in sustaining life on Earth is not well understood," said Jonathan Baillie, executive vice president and chief scientist at the National Geographic Society. "This research will help decision-makers, on global and local levels, prioritize where action should be taken to protect mountain systems, the resources they provide, and the people who depend on them."

What you can do to help a loved one in need during the holiday season
Christmas is always a time of good cheer and fun where people celebrate and get together. There is often a lot of cooking involved, presents, snow, Christmas shopping and so much more fun activities. For some people, however, this can be a difficult period for them. People do have friends and family who are addicts or recovering addicts from substance abuse. For a recovering alcoholic, for instance, it can be quite hard to stay clean when everywhere you go people are celebrating by drinking. If we have such loved ones in our lives it is our responsibility to help them get through such times and to grant them the strength to stay committed. Below we have highlighted a few tips that you can use to do so.
1.Be supportive
The holidays are often the time when the whole family gets together after a busy year. It is often a time that everyone looks forward to since they get to see those loved ones that they have not been able to in a while. During such parties or gatherings, it can often be difficult for a person who is a recovering addict for instance. They may feel the temptation to isolate themselves to avoid the feeling of shame, as they may feel like a disappointment to the family. The best thing you can do for them at a time like this is to be supportive. Include them in family celebrations and treat them just as you will all the other family members. Avoid having some form of intervention at this time as they may feel ambushed and they may even isolate themselves more which is counterproductive to their progress.
2.Get them some help
You may have a loved one who is actively struggling with an addiction, be it alcoholic or otherwise and have recognized that they need help to overcome it. During this holiday season, one way to spread the love is to reach out to them and offer to get them some help. You can consider taking them to an inpatient drug rehab center which is very helpful. They will receive professional help for their condition and afterward will get back on the feet ready to take on life again. This would be such a wonderful gift for them this season.
3.Plan convenient parties
During the holiday season, it is quite normal for people to plan parties that are filled with alcohol and champagne for celebrations. This may be during office parties, thanksgiving, Christmas parties and so much more. If you have a loved one coming home for Christmas, for instance, then the best way to help them is to be more accommodating. If they are a recovering addict, then try as much as possible to have alcohol-free parties. Doing this will be such a kind gesture since you be eliminating all the triggers that could cause them to relapse. They need as much support and help as possible to stay clean and committed to their path, therefore, show some holiday spirit and be accommodating to them.

Expedition 61 Commander Luca Parmitano of ESA (European Space Agency) will grapple Dragon with NASA astronaut Andrew Morgan acting as a backup. NASA's Jessica Meir will assist the duo by monitoring telemetry during Dragon's approach. Coverage of robotic installation to the Earth-facing port of the Harmony module will begin at 8 a.m.
This delivery, SpaceX's 19th cargo flight to the space station under NASA's Commercial Resupply Services contract, will support dozens of new and existing investigations. NASA's research and development work aboard the space station contributes to the agency's deep space exploration plans, including future Moon and Mars missions.
Here are details about some of the scientific investigations Dragon is delivering:
A Better Picture of Earth's Surface
The Hyperspectral Imager Suite (HISUI) is a next-generation, hyperspectral Earth imaging system. Every material on Earth's surface – rocks, soil, vegetation, snow/ice and human-made objects – has a unique reflectance spectrum. HISUI provides space-based observations for tasks such as resource exploration and applications in agriculture, forestry and other environmental areas.
Malting Barley in Microgravity
Malting ABI Voyager Barley Seeds in Microgravity tests an automated malting procedure and compares malt produced in space and on the ground for genetic and structural changes. Understanding how barley responds to microgravity could identify ways to adapt it for nutritional use on long-duration spaceflights.
Spread of Fire
The Confined Combustion investigation examines the behavior of flames as they spreads in differently shaped confined spaces in microgravity. Studying flames in microgravity gives researchers a better look at the underlying physics and basic principles of combustion by removing gravity from the equation.
Keeping Bones and Muscles Strong
Rodent Research-19 (RR-19) investigates myostatin (MSTN) and activin, molecular signaling pathways that influence muscle degradation, as possible targets for preventing muscle and bone loss during spaceflight and enhancing recovery following return to Earth. This study also could support the development of therapies for a wide range of conditions that cause muscle and bone loss on Earth.
Checking for Leaks
NASA is launching Robotic Tool Stowage (RiTS), a docking station that allows Robotic External Leak Locator (RELL) units to be stored on the outside of space station, making it quicker and simpler to deploy the instruments. The leak locator is a robotic, remote-controlled tool that helps mission operators detect the location of an external leak and rapidly confirm a successful repair. These capabilities can be applied to any place that humans live in space, including NASA's lunar Gateway and eventually habitats on the Moon, Mars, and beyond.
These are just a few of the hundreds of investigations providing opportunities for U.S. government agencies, private industry, and academic and research institutions to conduct microgravity research that leads to new technologies, medical treatments and products that improve life on Earth. Conducting science aboard the orbiting laboratory will help us learn how to keep astronauts healthy during long-duration space travel and demonstrate technologies for future human and robotic exploration beyond low-Earth orbit to the Moon and Mars.
For almost 20 years, humans have lived and worked continuously aboard the International Space Station, advancing scientific knowledge and demonstrating new technologies, making research breakthroughs not possible on Earth that will enable long-duration human and robotic exploration into deep space. As a global endeavor, more than 230 people from 18 countries have visited the unique microgravity laboratory that has hosted more than 2,500 research investigations from researchers in 106 countries.

5 Tips for Managing the Seasonal Rush at Your Restaurant
Holidays are busy. Family comes to town, no one wants to cook, and so there is only one option: head your favorite restaurant for dinner. For restaurant owners, Managing restaurants during a seasonal rush can be chaotic, stressful, and exhausting. However, it is certainly manageable and when done well, you can expect to be seeing an influx of green numbers.
Here are five tips for managing your way through a busy holiday rush:
1. Hire Seasonal Staff
When the holidays come around, there is always a staffing shortage as more businesses are seeking seasonal or temporary employees to make it through the holiday season. You will want to be sure that you plan to hire in advance of the season and not wait until the last minute to hire and start training. If you wait too long, you will find yourself with a limited pool of prospective hires.
Be sure to account for training time so you will not have a new server struggling with the basics among the crowds. Here is a tip: Millennials make up a large percentage of seasonal workforce, so aim your marketing at them!
2. Keep Inventory Fully Stocked
Review past seasons' sale logs and see what items sold like hotcakes and what flopped. The last thing guests want to hear is "sold out." Your restaurant's historical data or sale forecasting can help determine what items sell quickly in the seasonal months and what other items you should consider removing from your menu.
3. Offer More Online
Online services are not just convenient for customers, but for restaurants as well. If you utilize online reservations and ordering, you are freeing your staff to focus their attention elsewhere or being able to plan in advance for busy times. For example, you know you have a table of 12 coming in, you can arrange staffing in advance to better accommodate.
Utilizing a third-party food delivery is another great, simple way to reach new markets without sending off your own employees.
4. Upgrade Your Restaurant's POS System
If you are not taking advantage of today's technology in terms of POS software, you are surely missing out. An advanced restaurant pos can make managing a restaurant much easier. Not only would you be able to track sales, you will have a way to manage your inventory as items sell and manage employee scheduling, all with one system instead of multiple tools.
A decent system will not only help you operate your business, but it can also help you grow by adding customer loyalty programs and tracking reports to find areas to improve upon.
5. Prepare Your Staff
The holiday season is rough on staff. Take the time to meet with your team and work out any areas for concern before the rush. Go over your expectations and cover common issues they can expect to encounter as well as the steps you would like them to follow. A prepared staff can provide optimal service to your customers.
The holiday season is not for the faint of heart. Things will get busy, customers might get irritatable, and the amount of people moving through your restaurant will feel like a sweeping current. But if you make an effort to prepare your business and take advantage of your time and opportunities, you can turn a profit.

NASA, French Space Laser Measures Massive Migration of Ocean Animals
Every night, under the cover of darkness, countless small sea creatures – from squid to krill – swim from the ocean depths to near the surface to feed. This vast animal migration – the largest on the planet and a critical part of Earth's climate system – has been observed globally for the first time thanks to an unexpected use of a space-based laser.
Researchers observed this vertical migration pattern using the Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations (CALIPSO) satellite -- a joint venture between NASA and the French space agency, Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales -- that launched in 2006. They published their findings in the journal Nature Wednesday.
"This is the latest study to demonstrate something that came as a surprise to many: that lidars have the sensitivity to provide scientifically useful ocean measurements from space," said Chris Hostetler, a scientist at NASA's Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, and co-author on the study. "I think we are just scratching the surface of exciting new ocean science that can be accomplished with lidar."
The study looks at a phenomenon known as Diel Vertical Migration (DVM), in which small sea creatures swim up from the deep ocean at night to feed on phytoplankton near the surface, then return to the depths just before sunrise. Scientists recognize this natural daily movement around the world as the largest migration of animals on Earth in terms of total number.
The cumulative effect of daily vertically migrating creatures on Earth's climate is significant. During the day, ocean phytoplankton photosynthesize and, in the process, absorb significant amounts of carbon dioxide, which contributes to the ocean's ability to absorb the greenhouse gas from the atmosphere. Animals that undergo DVM come up to the surface to feed on phytoplankton near the ocean's surface and then swim back down, taking the phytoplankton carbon with them. Much of this carbon is then defecated at depths where it is effectively trapped deep in the ocean, preventing its release back into the atmosphere.
"What the lidar from space allowed us to do is sample these migrating animals on a global scale every 16 days for 10 years," said Mike Behrenfeld, the lead for the study and a senior research scientist and professor at Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon. "We've never had anywhere near that kind of global coverage to allow us to look at the behavior, distribution and abundance of these animals."
Zeroing in on tropical and subtropical ocean regions, researchers found that while there are fewer vertically migrating animals in lower-nutrient and clearer waters, they comprise a greater fraction of the total animal population in these regions. This is because the migration is a behavior that has evolved primarily to avoid visual predators during the day when visual predators have their greatest advantage in clear ocean regions.
In murkier and more nutrient-rich regions, the abundance of animals that undergo DMV is higher, but they represent a smaller fraction of the total animal population because visual predators are at a disadvantage. In these regions, many animals just stay near the surface both day and night.
The researchers also observed long-term changes in populations of migrating animals, likely driven by climate variations. During the study period (2008 to 2017), CALIPSO data revealed an increase in migrating animal biomass in the subtropical waters of the North and South Pacific, North Atlantic and South Indian oceans. In the tropical regions and North Atlantic, biomass decreased. In all but the tropical Atlantic regions, these changes correlated with changes in phytoplankton production.
This animal-mediated carbon conveyor belt is recognized as an important mechanism in Earth's carbon cycle. Scientists are adding animals that undergo DVM as a key element in climate models.
"What these modelers haven't had is a global dataset to calibrate these models with, to tell them where these migrators are most important, where they're most abundant, and how they change over time," said Behrenfeld. "The new satellite data give us an opportunity to combine satellite observations with the models and do a better job quantifying the impact of this enormous animal migration on Earth's carbon cycle."
The satellite data are also relevant to global fisheries because the migrating animals are an important food source for larger predators that lurk in the depths of the ocean. Those predators are often species of fish that are attractive to commercial fisheries. The larger the DVM signal, the larger the population of fish that can live in the deep sea.
Though CALIPSO's laser was designed to measure clouds and atmospheric aerosols, it can penetrate the upper 20 meters of the ocean's surface layer. If the migrating animals reach this layer, they are detected by CALIPSO.
NASA uses the vantage point of space to understand and explore our home planet, improve lives and safeguard our future. The agency's observations of Earth's complex natural environment are critical to understanding how our planet's natural resources and climate are changing now and could change in the future.
