Spring 2013 Home Trends

Interior design has seasonal trends, just like fashion. However, it is slightly more expensive and less environmentally friendly to keep your home bang up to date with seasonal style all year round. This is why I have picked the best of this year’s spring interior designs that are easily adaptable for your home. Or, better yet, if you are giving your home and makeover, this guide will inspire you to create a contemporary, yet cosy space.

Colour

Spring is the season of colour; it is the season when the greys and blacks of winter are put to bed and the rest of the colours on the spectrum come to life. Pantone’s tangerine tango is the colour of the season, which coordinates perfectly with lime greens and silvers. It is usually wise to follow the mantra ‘less is more’ when it comes to colour – it is advisable to paint with neutral colours and mix this with a shot of bright colour to break up the blandness and draw attention to a feature wall.

Bright bouquets – If you don’t want to get the paintbrush out, inject a splash of colour into a room with a bunch of flowers. Create your own bunch from a florist and pick colours and flowers that stand out and either match or enhance the room they will be in.
Pastels – Light colours like baby blues and baby pinks are often popular in Spring because they are associated with Easter.

Shapes

A big trend this season is geometric prints, both in earth tones and bold hues. Geometric shapes like hexagons and polyhedrons in repeated patterns look great on wallpapers and prints but, again, less is always more with bold shapes.

If don’t want to go the whole way with colour and geometric prints, there is an easy way to do it. Statement pieces like
quirky mirrors, a couple of patterned cushions or some cleverly, yet stylishly, designed storage options can transform the look of a whole room with little expense (well, less than redecorating a whole room).

Spotless

If there is one thing that never goes out of fashion every Spring, it is the spring clean. If you feel your home is looking a little gloomy, get out the marigolds and get cleaning. You’d be amazed what a good clean, a little de-clutter and some feng shui can do for the look of your home and the clarity of your mind.
