Top 10 Most Stolen Cars

Car theft remains one of the most pressing problems when it comes to crime prevention. Although the majority of new vehicles feature complex key codes and immobilizers, car thieves are finding new ways of circumventing these security measures. In addition, a number of older models remain high on car thieves' wish lists, thanks to the relative ease with which one could break in and make their getaway.
The National Insurance Crime Bureau recently compiled a list of the most stolen vehicles for 2011, using data submitted to the National Crime Information Center by various law enforcement agencies throughout the country. This list should serve as advisory data to anyone who either owns one of the vehicles on the list or to those planning to buy one of these vehicles. Nevertheless, any car owner should be vigilant and savvy about protecting their car from theft.

1. 1994 Honda Accord

For the fourth time in a row, the 1994 Accord tops the NICB's list of most stolen cars. The Accord's lack of security safeguards and a high demand for vehicle parts makes it a tempting target for thieves. The problem was so severe that Honda began installing immobilizers, which are devices that make it impossible for the vehicle to run without a key.

2. 1998 Honda Civic

Yet another Honda ranks near the top of the most stolen vehicle list. The Civic's popularity for a generation of "ricers" as a cheap and easily customizable ride puts it squarely in the bull's-eye of car thieves.

3. 2006 Ford Pickup (full size)

Given that Ford pickup trucks are among the best selling vehicles in the U.S., it should be no surprise that it found its way onto the most stolen cars list. Nevertheless, its #3 ranking signifies the first time a pickup truck has been this high on the most stolen list since the NICB started tracking auto thefts in 2000.

4. 1991 Toyota Camry

Not only is the 1991 Camry a favorite of those looking for a cheap used car, but it also remains the favorite of car thieves.

5. 2000 Dodge Caravan

A growing demand for parts, relatively high popularity and few generational changes make the Dodge Caravan a tempting target for car thieves.

6. 1994 Acura Integra

The Integra is a constant victim of auto theft, thanks in large part to the ubiquitous "tuner" scene and a high demand for various parts. The majority of stolen Integras face a last ride to the nearest chop shop.

7. 1999 Chevrolet Pickup (full size)

The popular Chevy pickup makes yet another appearance on the most stolen cars list.

8. 2004 Dodge Pickup (full size)

Dodge pickup trucks are another target of car thieves in search of full-size trucks.

9. 2002 Ford Explorer

The 2002 Explorer, one of the most popular mid-size SUVs sold in the U.S., earned a #9 rank as one of the most stolen vehicles in 2011.

10. 1994 Nissan Sentra

This older compact car remains a favorite of car thieves, making its way to the #10 rank.
